This Institute interprets the scenery of traditional Korean temples, and studies sites, space organizing techniques, and scenery factors regarding the temples. By doing this, it seeks to find out the identity of traditional Korean temples, to use the results to help recover traditional temples and built-up of the modern temples, and, further, to provide guidelines of researching the traditional landscape architecture.
Since its establishment in 1973, the Institute has done lots of work, such as: making the basic plan of the University¡¯s Gyeongju Campus; operation of a seedbed for tourism on Seorak Mt.; making a proposal of operation and management of forests in Ssanggye Temple; making a basic planning of Doseon Temple; research of symbolic meanings of the scenery of Bulguk Temple; analysis of environment in Bongeun Temple; publication of theses regarding temple scenery; analysis of visual structures used in traditional temples; making the basic planning of Yeonheung Temple in Younggwang and of Haelim Temple in Busan, and so on.
It plans to hold a scientific forum regularly, to publish a collection of materials of the major temples, and to keep researching the symbolic meanings in the traditional Korean temples.
