A
hall of learning, the College of Buddhist Culture was established
on the Gyeongju Campus in 1994 by votive offeings of three treasures
whith lofty ideals - self - develpoment of mankind and realization
of the pure land. The College consists of 5majors. In the Division
of Buddhist Studies; the Major of Buddhist Studies, where contents
of the Buddhist thoughts and their adaptability to modern society
are handled; the Major of Seon(Zen) Studies, in which students learn
teachings required for attaining clear human minds; the Majors of
Child Studies on Buddhism and of Early Childhood Education, which
teaches theories of child and juvenile education, practices/researches
the theories, and, further, cultivates talented people who will teach
on the educational sites; the Major of Korean Traditional Music, which
educates students to research the Korean traditional music at large
and to learn performance techniques, and also cultivates talented
people who can perform and teach traditional Buddhist music. |

| The Major of Buddhist Studies is divdied into three
areas- Buddhist thoughts, history of Buddhism, and applied Buddhism.
The area of Buddhist thoughts researches creeds and philosophical
thoughts of various denominations covering fundatmental Buddhism to
Mahayanist Buddhistm. The area of history of Buddhism studies development
of history of Buddhism studies development of Buddhism in Asia such
as India, Southern Asia, China, and Korea from the viewpoints of history
and culture. The area of applied Buddhism, based on the thoughts and
history of Buddhism as described above, develops learning relate with
human life of today and the future. It also researches/ develops methodologies
of practicing them. Students of the Major can concentratedly research
one of thes thress areas of interest. |

| The Major of Seon Studies investigates history and thoughts
of Seon Buddhism critically, reviews the history of the formation
and ideas of Seon Buddhism, and obtains the spirit and methods of
practicing Seon Buddhism. Further, it researches and reviews from
several viewpoints the true nature of Seon Buddhism as the religion
of life, self-consciousness, and wisdom. By applying thoughts of Seon
Buddhism to the present and the future, it seeks to accomplish dignity
and trust for each individual, and then, to contribute to the peace
and well-being of mankind. |

| The Major of Child Studies on Buddhism, the only major
in Korea, was established on Gyeongju Campus in 1987 for the purpose
of cultivating teachers for infants and children at kindergartens,
which is the long-cherished wish of the Buddhist world. After graduation,
students will advance into: general kindergartens or kindergartens
belonging to Buddhist temples; nursery organizations such as children¡¯s
houses or playrooms; counseling offices for children and infants;
broadcasting systems for children¡¯s programs; children¡¯s houses under
the control of social welfare organizations; and national or governmental
kindergartens. That is, most of the graduates are now working as teachers,
counsellors, and researchers for children and infants. In order to
cultivate these talented students, the Major offers the courses of
Buddhist infant education, psychology of development, production and
practice of teaching materials, practical education of piano and painting
for children, internship at kindergarten, psychological measurement,
and practice of counseling. |

| The Major of Early Childhood Education was newly established
in 2002 with the foundational spirit. The Buddhist sense about humans
and education is that all children have the disposition to become
Buddha. Students of the Major study and practice learning methods
and educational technologies of early childhood education, develop
responsibility and capabilities as future kindergarten teachers with
the Buddhist sense of duty, and through field work at the kindergarten
attached to the University, complete all of their studies. |

| It is a unique for the Major to be divided into three
areas - performing ability, creation, and theory. Through education
of the Korean traditional music, students get to learn Korean musical
language; through education of creative music, they are taught to
accept modern music; and through education of theories of the western
music, Buddhist music, dance, and Korean traditional music, they get
to have a comprehensive understanding of the whole field of music.
